He graduated college… He wanted to do something else but wasn’t sure exactly what. So he decided to join the Air Force. While stationed at the Zweibrucken air base in Germany, he proposed to a woman… they got married… they had a baby… then another… then another… And that was the beginning of my family. My father is a veteran.

My birthday was this past Tuesday, Nov 8th. I had an indoor paintball party last night as one of a few ways to celebrate. I didn’t invite the entire world the way I normally do. I invited a few choice folks and we had a ball! Don’t let the photo above fool you… Yes, the balls sting for a couple of seconds when they hit you, and they can leave a mark but put it this way… We’re going back early January to do it all over again and to make it a regular thing. Anyway…

As I lay there on the field with a jammed paint gun lol, with paint balls flying and paint guns going off, I thought about the fact that RIGHT NOW, there is that same situation happening but with REAL bullets, REAL guns, REAL lives at risk (often for a FAKE cause but that’s another story) and the folks involved are doing this while people like you and I sleep in our warm beds, and flip through TV channels, and casually send tweets and update facebook statutes. These are the people who put their lives on the line for us for a variety of reasons. I guess my over thinking is why I got shot a few times lol! But we all did…

Paintball hickey, courtesy of my own little brother Flo Blitz Smh…

But seriously. It’s amazing how a fun outing like paintball, where we had about 40 adults, running, laughing, eating, and enjoying ourselves… brought me such a revelation of the value of life. Toady is indeed veteran’s day so I urge you to wish a veteran well on this day but really take a few minutes to think about your own life, the value of it, what you’re actually doing with it, and if what you’re doing with your life really matters. No offense, but there are some people who live life everyday for themselves and them themselves only, without ever making a deposit into humanity or the loves of others. Just think about it…

I felt like Moses the other day!!!! LoL, Wait… Lemme explain. So, I’m digging through my closet looking for this one shirt in particular. I’m pulling hangers out of the closet I’m looking through drawers, I’m doing the most. So I go back to my closet and I have this hanger in my left hand with about three shirts on it and I’m using my right hand to rummage through the closet and find this shirt that obviously don’t wanna be founT yes I said founT. So anyway, the TV is on and one of my favorite commercials comes on… Capital One. Actually, I’m really feeling the new Bud Light “Man Up” commercials and of course the Dos Equis “Stay Thirsty, My Friends” guy is my uncle in my head. Anyway, the Commercial goes off and it ends with the classic question… “What’s In Your Wallet?” As random is this is, something told me to not look in my wallet but to look in my hand. Low and behold, I check the hanger with the three shirts in my left hand and it actually had FOUR shirts on it, including the extra evasive yet oh so fly shirt that I was looking for. This is the type of shirt that really takes my arm and chest sexy to the next level so it was mandatory that I find it, You feel me?!?!?!?

Anyway, it made me think… How many times do we look, and search, and waste time doing what my pastor calls “The fallacy of the elsewhere”? Meaning, we have exactly what we need right under our noses yet we spend time, effort, money, energy, resources and a bunch of other stuff searching and looking elsewhere for the answer.

I don’t want to spook anyone out but I’m about to use a word that is sooooo taboo… You ready? The word is… “BIBLE.” And the reason I’m using it is, there’s a situation in there that illustrates this exact situation. It’s in Exodus 3 & 4 when Moses meets God in the form of a burning bush. In a nutshell, God let’s Moses know that He had a job for him. He wanted Moses to deliver the nation of Israel from Egypt. Anyway, Moses gave all these wack excuses for why he didn’t feel that he was the right person for the job and how he felt that he wasn’t equipped enough to do it and God said, “What’s in your hand?” I’ll let you read it on your own, if you’re not familiar, but basically, God was trying to show Moses that it’s not complicated so stop making excuses… Your answer is not out there so stop searching out there! Your answer is not in your excuses or in your thinking that you’re not equipped enough. What you need is simple and it’s right here in your hand.

This is your assignment for this week *Puts on school teacher glasses… Think about what you’ve been putting off or making excuses about because it seems too difficult or uncomfortable to accomplish. Think about what you’ve been searching and searching for. The answer to them both just might be simple… And it might be right there in your hand. No need to make excuses or keep searching elsewhere for an answer. The answer might lie in a simple conversation with God and Him showing you what’s in your hand because ultimately HE IS THE CAPITAL ONE…

*Drops mic and moonwalks off stage….

Thank you…

We’ve all seen that Christmas cartoon with the ghost of Christmas past, present and future, right? Well, I had an interesting encounter like that, this morning… Minus the Christmas of course lol! Now before I start, I don’t want to spook anybody out with what I’m about to share. I am indeed a Christian but as most of you know, I don’t use my blog nor my music to push a Christian agenda (so to speak). Although I try not to contradict what I stand for and who I serve in the way that I create, I try to just let my life and my choices and my overall character be the primary way that I push that agenda in pleasing God. With that being said, this will be one of the few times that I will touch on spirituality but I’m not pushing what I believe on anyone. I think that what I am about to share can be felt and appreciate by us all regardless of where your Faith lies…

This morning, before I even got out of bed, In a matter of about 20 minutes, I was walked through about 15 years of my life. Literally, hundreds of scenarios that I’ve encountered, flashed before my eyes. Things that I know that I had no business doing. Things that I thought were a good look but in hind sight were just plain ole stupid. Relationships that I mis-handled. People whom I’ve hurt. Money I’ve blown. Opportunities that I botched up. Time spent on people and in places that was just all wrong. Relationships that I never should’ve even entertained. Health risks that I just walked right into. And even situations in which I was protected and didn’t even know that danger was hovering over me. To go through all of these things and still be here… in the condition that I am in right now, I had to give thanks. And if you can relate, then you can relate.

Paint this picture… A man and woman get married. In that marriage, obviously a certain amount of time, effort, dedication, etc… must be given by each party. But imagine instead of the man giving that time to his woman, he gives it all to other women… AND she even allows him… Better yet, she even pays for the dinners that he takes these women to. She supplies him with protection while he sleeps with these women. She gives him gas money so that he can drive to see these women. That analogy might be a bit crude but that’s what God (Or a higher power, or an energy, or the universe, etc… depending on what you believe) does for us. It’s called Grace. It’s a protection and sort of a “Get out of jail free card” for all of the foolishness that we do. God loves us so He gives us grace. For most of us, Grace is the reason that we even have anything left… Grace is the reason that we’re even alive.

I was shown just how much time, dedication, money, and overall effort that I stole from my own purpose, from my own destiny, from my own loved ones, and from my own marriage to God and gave it to all of these other people and things that don’t even matter. He showed me that this morning. He also showed me that Grace is not something that lasts forever. Grace is a limited time offer. Grace will run out one day.

Side Bar- One key thing that stuck out to me was a relationship that I mis-managed. It’s a situation that’s sensitive to me, and something that I’ve known long before this morning but it was shown to be again and in an even more important light this morning. It is/was a relationship with a Big Brother figure of mine. This is a dude who put my career into position, my mind into proper perspective with several things, my bank account in the black, and even my creativity/talents into a new arena. And out of me wanting to step out and do things in a selfish and even inconsiderate fashion, I put a major dent in our relationship. I know you’re reading this right now, Big Bro, and in front of the thousands of followers, fans and supporters that I have, I want to thank you again for the talk you allowed us to have a couple of months ago and again I offer up my most sincere apologies. I know I still have obligations on my end as well as some tasks of reconciliation but please know that our bond is one of the major things that flashed before my eyes this morning and it’s a bond that God granted me as a deliverance from a path that I was headed down that I thank God never came to fruition.

This is deep y’all. If you can relate to Grace, then you can relate. If you can’t, you won’t… but maybe one day you will. Let He that hath ears listen…

Enjoy your weekend, family.

Law and Order… Have you ever heard of that TV show? Of course you have!!! I watch it from time to time. I actually enjoy it. What has come to mind over and over is… If you’re an attorney and a person comes to you telling you that they have committed a crime, how do you defend them knowing that they did it? How do you take money to manipulate the minds of a jury into letting your client walk free? I’m sure there are thousands of opinions on that topic but I took the liberty of asking someone…

*Side Bar- Now, when you see me send tweets and Facebook statuses thanking God it’s partly because I truly believe that I’ve been Blessed and I’m very thankful for that and I like to show my gratitude publicly. One of the areas that I’m extremely Blessed in, is the area of relationships. I happen to have a network that is huge, diverse and very conducive to all of my movements and I can take no credit for that gift being given to me. I thank God for all of the relationships that I’ve collected along the way.

With that being said, I have mentors in my life who I have adopted as play “Aunts & Uncles.” One of my uncles happens to be Bruce Cutler (You might wanna google that). Uncle Bruce has not only been a major help in my life as a man but also in legal practice on the behalf of a few different situations, not to mention when we go out to dinner he pretty much has the key to the city and he’s well aware of my Italian food obsession so that comes in handy lol!! One night at dinner, I asked Uncle Bruce that question and his answer was rather interesting, especially coming from the mouth of a White Man in America. He said,

“Ya know, Lennie… You’re the first person to ever have the courage to ask me that. And I wat to make sure you get a clear answer, son… I don’t think that anyone should be locked up in a cage like an animal. I do think that some form of punishment and correction should be in place for people who break the law but I never could stomach the idea of a person not having their freedom. This Country was established on murder, theft, manipulation, greed, lust, envy, jealousy, and a whole lot of other stuff. We established this country displaying these things towards England where we came from and especially towards the Native Americans who were here first. So to establish an entire country and eventual ‘Leader of the FREE World’ on those principles yet snatch away the freedom of your citizens wo do it on a smaller scale has never gone over well with me.”

Wow… Some of you may agree. Some of you may not. But, Wow…

I’ve never been an overly political guy. It isn’t until recently that I’ve started paying more attention to the “climate” of our culture and our planet and really thinking things through. And let me tell you, our country is in a very unique situation right now. As I mentioned in my  Watch The Throne post, we are not exactly the most liked nation on the planet. And to add to that, not to push my spiritual beliefs on any of you but I am indeed a follower of Christ and in our Bible, there is little to no mention of the United States in the prophetic global landscape. There is also…. Oh, wait… the reason I wrote the title of the post the way that I did is because one of the old heads that I know calls our politicians that “C” word, lol! Shout out to Tommy!! But as I was saying, I would seriously urge you all to start doing research on the economy and its future, and even research where else on this planet would be a good place for you to live and move and have your being, if it ever came to that. This is not to alarm or scare anyone into packing up and heading for Canada lol! It’s just a means to make us all further aware of what our country was built on… what pluses and minuses we have in our DNA… what our relationship is to the rest of the world… and what that may or may not mean for the next 5… 10… 20… or 50 years.

We’re family so I’m gonna share the fact that recently I had a bit of an epiphany. One of my dearest friends C. Tucker bought me a book for my birthday a while back called The Lakota Way. Not only is it rich in tools that you can use for your everyday living, but it gives an in-depth view of the Native American culture and mindset. It has me in the process of planning a “pilgrimage” of sorts to the Dakota/Montana area next year to actually live with a Native American family for about a week. In the preliminary talks that we’ve been having, I won’t be able to record this trip since the people of this culture have already been imposed upon and manipulated and  exploited enough by America. Therefore, this trip will be purely for my own soul and spirit after which I hope to be at a new level of awareness and I will gladly share what I can with you all as it agrees with the terms that I will establish with them.

Special thanks to my homie Ms. Phenomenality for laying the ground work for this opportunity…

If you didn’t feel that just now then you can just ignore this…

But if you did, what did you think? What came to mind? Who did you call? Honestly, I started praying lol! I ain’t even gonna lie! I called a few significant others and sent a tweet only to learn that the earthquake spread from beyond Brooklyn with an epicenter in Richmond VA with a 5.8 on the Richter scale. Canada all the way to North Carolina.

Did you think about all of the stuff that you wanted to accomplish that never got done? Or maybe it wasn’t that deep for you. I was on the phone with my homegirl at the time who works in Manhattan and I told her to hang up and leave the building. When I lived in LA back in 2001, that was my first encounter with an earthquake and it even though it was only tremors (similar to today’s) it was still a life changing and introspective experience to feel the very ground beneath your feet moving! I know that you’re all busy and you don’t have a lot of time to be on here at my blog but I want you to all think about how different this experience could have been. This could’ve taken a turn in the total opposite direction. What would you have done if that happened? What would you wish that you had in place if that happened? What would you wish that you had done more of or less of if this was a destructive situation? I know that I, personally, have a few things to change in  my own life. I even thought about the 10 year Anniversary of 9-11 being upon us and… Nevermind, don’t let me get started with my conspiracy theories which would cause for even more reason for us to be on our knees!!!!

But anyway, I’m sure that the churches will be full this Sunday! LoL! Then again, with people’s attention spans, this’ll probably old news by 10pm and we’ll be back to talking about the NBA lock out or Will & Jada or the new NFL Season or Kim K’s new wedding spread. Anyhoo… I’m glad no one was hurt… And Cali, stop laughing at us!!!!!!! lol!! Be Blessed my friends. Go with God…

Have you ever blushed and covered your eyes as a child, while accidentally walking in on your parents slow dancing in the kitchen?

Have you ever come in the house from playing outside and your parents are nowhere to be found but as you walk towards the bathroom you hear the shower water running, and both of their voices coming from the bathroom? That kinda gave you the same weird/blushy feeling too, huh…

Or what about when they first sat you down for that “Birds, Bees, Flowers & Trees” talk and while you could hear their words, your mind couldn’t help but fancy the idea that they both had done this… and done this plenty!?!?

They love each other. And it’s unfortunate that  not enough children get to experience these weird, blushy feelings. It’s unfortunate that not enough children (or teenagers) get to experience that Exhibit A-Z kind of love. But Kel, why do you call it Exhibit A-Z love? I’m glad you asked;

Two people meet each other. They like each other. They trust each other. They grow to love each other. They decide to be committed to each other. They vow to be with each other forever, even despite the hard times and flaws. Then eventually, they create evidence of their bond. Whether an “accident” or planned out, they create a life. That life is Exhibit A-Z of everything that they’ve put into their love for each other, and everything that they plan to put into their newborn child. Not a “One Night Stand” Exhibit… Not an “Ooops, We were drunk” Exhibit… Not a “Well, how do you know it’s mine, I mean after all it was a group thang” Exhibit… And not one of those “Wait, I thought you were on the pill” OR “OMG, How did this happen?” Exhibits. Don’t get me wrong, all of the aforementioned exhibits produce beautiful people… positive people… world-changing and good-hearted people. But there is a certain security that often comes with being raised as an Exhibit A-Z child that I wish we all would think more about, before A- choosing a mate and B- deciding to have sex with them. Obviously, waiting until you’re married is what the standard is and what it should be in the ideal world. But if you fall short of that (which 98% of us have) there should come a time when the ONLY people you should be having sex with, are people who you can see yourself creating an Exhibit A-Z with. Why? Because you, your mate and the child, all deserve that type of environment… and because ACCIDENTS HAPPEN… ie The Maury Povich Show! So what made me post this? I’m glad you asked…

Just like last week’s post, I was talking to the little homie Dee again, and somehow this topic came up. I’m not sure how many of you want to admit this or are even aware of this but the first world that you are introduced to is, your household. When that world does not supply you with the love and security that you are naturally in need of, you will try to find it elsewhere. Lack of love and insecurity due to an absence of these at home, is the root of why street gangs and promiscuity (male & female) thrive! Does that mean that if you don’t get these things you automatically end up a Crip or a Stripper? No, that’s not what I’m saying. Some of our most prominent human figures and some of my best friends and favorite people come from “broken” and/or non-Exhibit A-Z homes however, a home that strays further and further away from the Exhibit A-Z model, has less of a chance of feeding its children the soul food and spirit food that the child needs. I’m guessing that this is why God did the whole Adam & Eve scenario and not an EBT & Eve scenario… One is just more ideal than the other.

Love is the most powerful force on the planet. Just like any other force, when it’s guided and focused in a specific direction (even if it has flaws) it can be used in an amazing way (ie a river or a laser). But when there is no focus, nor boundaries, nor specific direction this force can and will be in a chaotic sporadic state and that does almost everyone no good (ie hurricane, tornado or Tazmanian Devil lol). Specifically, I look at women in this situation. Why? Because I like looking at women : ) LoL! No, seriously… reason being, because what’s commonly missing from the household and inhibiting the Exhibit A-Z model is men. Waaaaaaaaaay too many fathers are missing. (See You Black Women, Smh). A result of this is A- Too many women looking too many places for love and security, B- Too many women forming this “I don’t need a man” mentality, which can make it harder than it needs to be when a man does finally come along and try to love you, C- Too many women settling for any ole dude who comes along and halfway, kinda, sorta, shows some affection.

I have friends from other races, ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds. And we often talk, and we make it a point to talk about the things that might make us all a little uncomfortable and might even offend each other but we do it out of love, ie My God is better than your God, and why do your people do XYZ, Yeah… those kinds of talks. Something was asked in one of these talks. The question was, “Why do so many black women seem so angry?” I was not offended when they asked me that. Not at all. Why? Because whether I agree with them or not, I can see why they would perceive that. I can see where they would get that from. And my answer to them was simple… “Because black women are hurting.” Anger is a secondary emotion. When you expect something, especially something that is rightfully yours (like love & security from home), and then you don’t get it, it hurts. And when you’re hurt deep enough and longer than you’d like, as a human, you will become angered. A lot of the neck rolling, finger snapping, “I don’t need no man” proclaiming, Reality show drink splashing, 3 & 4 Baby daddy having, I can drop-it drop-it lower than you for some money shouting women are hurt. Not all, but a nice amount of them. Too many of them weren’t presented to the world as Exhibit A-Z babies and whether they want to admit it or not… or if they even know it or not, something like that can stick with you, especially if it’s sticking with you in an unhealthy manner.

Before I end, I see in people’s comments and tweets and Facebook messages and BBM texts how people can mis-interpret words or become sensitive about an area that wasn’t even touched on so I’ll take this time to clear up any of that NOW:

“I know people who had both parents and they’re a hot mess. How do you explain that, Mr. Kel?!?!? Huh?!?”

KS- Exhibit A-Z does not mean having both parents. It’s deeper than that. It’s when you were born as a result of 2 people planning and consciously deciding that your life will be the evidence of their love for eachother and their love for God and their ongoing commitment to that Love.

“I’m a Black Woman and I’m not angry!”

KS- I didn’t say ALL black women… I didn’t even say MOST black women. #iFiTDontApplyLetiTFly

“That’s wrong, Kel! When your little white boy friend ask about angry black women, how come you didn’t stand up for us and bust him in the mouF for that stereo-type?”

KS- Well, for one, he’s not white. And with all of the stuff on TV and in media and with very few black women doing anything to try to stop it but instead support it, tweet about it, use the phrases in their everyday speech, and rush home to catch it on TV, I can see why he said what he said and I can’t really be mad at him if that’s the extent of his exposure to black women.

I’m almost sure that I’ll have to clarify something else but I wanted to get those out of the way first. No offense…

If you can, create children as evidence and as an exhibit of your love for that other person and your corporate love for God. I can’t think of any better reason to have a child. For some of you, that statement might a little too late, and that’s fine. For some of you, you may disagree and have your own list of better reasons to have a child, and that’s fine too. But for me, when I have children, they will be A- an object of affection for my future wife and I B- a symbol representing the love, sacrifice, and commitment that God has shown me… That I now will show the child as best as I can in return and C- Exhibit A-Z of all the love, dedication, and mutual faith that my future wife and I have for each other and corporately for God. The kid might still end up on a Maury show but I’d like to think that their chances are minimal if/when I take the Exhibit A-Z approach.

I’m a writer… Which makes me a thinker… Which potentially makes me a World Changer.

Jay-Z & Kanye West… With as much respect and appreciation that I have for you both, this isn’t really about you…

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN!!!!!!!

I saw a tweet go out from a dear friend of mine, Telisa D and it got me to thinking… And I’m concerned about us. The “throne” is the issue. By most accounts, there are 196 countries on this planet. Each one has their own government… their own way of doing things… their own system… their own culture… their own throne. Each throne is run and ruled by a person or a handful of people and their conscience and moral standard. In essence, the people of that country are tied to a system rooted in whatever that throne believes. Furthermore, that throne is most likely associated with a group of other thrones. These thrones have dinners together and play cards together and share weapons and money and maybe even blow trees and snort coke together and exchange bodily fluids, who knows? Some thrones are obviously more powerful than other thrones. Some thrones are more advanced than other thrones. At the root of all of this are 2 main thrones… The throne of GOOD and the throne EVIL.

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN!!!!!!!

Contrary to what you may believe there is no neutrality. A person’s belief system is rooted in one or the other. I’m not the one to judge each person on which throne they are (or appear to be) rooted in but it just is what it is, people. And although I am an American and we’re supposed to be the *does mocking air quotes… Leaders of The Free World with the fancy Red, White & Blue, I’m also NOT at liberty to judge any country’s throne on whether it’s rooted in good or evil… even my own. With that being said… Each throne is rooted in one or the other. And all of these thrones, Good or Evil constantly intermingle with each other on a daily basis.

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN!!!!!!!

The problem is, Evil tends to take more of a subtle, deceptive and secretive approach than Good. Evil does not come in a red outfit, with horns and a pitchfork. No, evil comes dressed as an attractive new opportunity, just when you happened to run into some extra cash… Evil comes in a 3-piece suit… Evil comes packaged as what you think might be your “soulmate” (whatever that means)… Evil comes with a low introductory interest rate… Evil comes to tempt your children… Evil comes as a bi-product and end result of bad habits… Evil comes promising to please and serve you but only seeks to enslave and dominate you. And if you think that there are not entire, powerful, entities out there… powerful THRONES out there with plans to do this, then you are sadly mistaken. I do not wish to put a damper on the day of anyone who may have downloaded the Watch The Throne album. I share this to actually encourage you to be more mindful of your decisions… more mindful of what may have an influence over you, without you even realizing it… more mindful of where your future is headed, as well as the future of whatever throne(s) you may attached to.

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN!!!!!!!

While some of you are busy watching the Jay-Z/Kanye throne, many of us didn’t realize that our country’s long standing AAA Credit rating has been down-graded to AA. They say AA+ but that little “+” can smoke one, let’s call it what it is. With no clear-cut plan to better our economy and with our citizens having either the “Everyday I’m hustling” attitude or the “Everyday I’m spending what I don’t really have on stuff that I don’t really need to impress people who I don’t really know… or people who I don’t really like” attitude, along with our key financial institutions having “Racks on Racks on Racks” as their theme song, I don’t see our financial situation getting any better. It may not get worse right away but I don’t see it getting any better.

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN!!!!!!!

I’ll add to that… I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to other countries. And because I travel in the name of entertainment, I don’t have the same “American Label” attached to me as a US citizen travelling as a tourist. Because of that and being a “personable” type of lad, I have had people from other countries open up to me about how people in their country, generally, feel about Americans. With that information along with things that I see in media, it is pretty evident that there are some Thrones out there who, if given the opportunity, would love to drive the genitals of US Throne into the mud and hope that mud dries into an eternal cement, REAL TALK. I say that to say, that as we decline, whether it’s in the area of finance, military defense, technology or otherwise, the opposition against America increases and the chance to fight back gets that much heavier.

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN!!!!!!!

I don’t want to turn this into a debate on Islam or Judaism or Christianity or Gnosticism or Atheism or Buddhism or New Age or New Thought or Hinduism or Scientology or Confucianism or even Hip Hopism… Believe what you believe. But be mindful that what you subscribe to is what you tie your life to. And whatever you subscribe to, has its thoughts on Good and Evil… it has its doctrine on Thrones. If Jay-Z and Kanye is what you choose to bang in your iPods and speakers all week, and then for those of you whole will purchase the hardcopy next week, knock yourselves out! But be mindful that while you’re watching their throne… Your spirit needs to also be watching the throne that truly matters.  NOT Sharing this with the 1 person or 1,000 people you think need to read this, would be almost disgusting of you…

LET THEM WHO HATH EARS LISTEN…. but y’all don’t hear me though.

I remember watching a group of kids make fun of a little girl, calling her “Rocky Head.” The teacher was there, watching and even she laughed at the fact that this young girl would always come to school with small pebble-like particles in her hair. The children would take turns acting like they were swiping the pieces out of her hair but sneaking in little smacks and slaps at the same time. Long story short, the girl lived in such a small home with her family that the area she slept in, required that her head be near the kitten’s litter box. Those small pebble-like pieces were kitty litter…

I remember attending PS 183 and being in the 6th grade. We had a student transfer to our school and he would always have a hat on and what appeared to be fake hair or a unique type of cloth sticking out from under the hat. As you know, at that age, it was mandatory for the boys to take off our hats when we entered the building but after a few days, we noticed that no one would tell him to remove his cap. In the playground on about day 4, Jamel Weaver decides that he’s going to take the kid’s hat off. Some of us promoted it, some of us told him not to but he did it anyway. When he did, that was the first time that any of us saw a bald-headed 11-year-old. The child was a cancer patient and that was our… well, at least my first encounter with something like that and I felt bad for the kid. Even though I personally didn’t do anything wrong to him, Jamel was one of my best friends so that association with him made me feel guilty.

I remember driving down the highway and seeing a woman in a cute little sports car, dressed like she was on her way to an important function (Nice dress, make-up, fancy shoes, accessories, etc…) with a flat tire on the side of the road. What made it odd was, there was a van pulled over behind her with a family inside. The driver of the van, was outside of the van arguing with this woman who had the flat tire. As I pulled over to maybe be of some assistance, she grabbed the tire iron, and chased the man back into his van and he sped off. I humbly walked up to offer some assistance and ironically she was nice to me despite her annoyance and frustration. After a few minutes I asked what happened between her and the guy she chased off and her reply was, “Look at me! I’m a woman, on my way to an NFL banquet. I do PR. I’m dressed like this… I’m trying to get to this event to network and maybe get some new clients and my friggin tire is shredded. This jerk sees me looking like this with a flat tire and pulls over not to offer help but to ask me for directions!!!!” Wow…

Webster’s defines COMPASSION as; Sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it. What I would like to know is how many of you see this on a regular basis? I know I don’t. If anything, I see more of the opposite.  How many of you show/display compassion? I know I can use some work in this area as well.

I often do my morning workout in the park on the track and on the monkey bars. I was walking to the park at about 6am a few weeks ago and I walked past a car. Not being nosey or anything, I just happened to look in and I saw this…

I was shocked. And please, if this is someone you know or if this is YOU personally, I mean no mal-intent by posting this picture. I know that I have a colorful sense of humor and I would hate for someone to think that I’m posting this for the purpose of laughter. This person could be the person who get’s teased because his clothes are wrinkled. This person could be the person whose co-workers talk about them behind their back because their clothes always smell like a hint of gasoline. This person could be the manager down at your local assemblyman’s office, pushing for change on OUR behalf, trying to help with laws that are unfair, banging on tables fighting for us in the areas of finance, housing, and education but because he’s at a rough patch in his life, we laugh and point and dust pebble-like particles out of his head, and snatch his hat off…

I implore thee… Make compassion more of a part of your daily lifestyle. And I’m talking to myself when I say this as well. Why? Because in these times, it’s the best answer to ignorance. You NEVER Know who a person is. You NEVER Know what they’re going through. You NEVER Know…

Here’s a song that I am honored to be a part of. A good friend of mine shows compassion every year and physically goes out onto the street and lives as a homeless person for a week. He’s a talented painter and graphic artist named Yusef Ramelize and his initiative is called Homeless For One Week. Take a look/listen to the song below and do us all a favor and just go check out his site and click that “LIKE” button on the Homeless For One Week Facebook page. You NEVER Know…

Have you ever said to your parents, “But so & so’s parents are letting them go!” and they replied with, “I don’t care what so & so’s parents are doing. I said YOU can’t go!” Or what about the time you said, “But such & such is doing it, why can’t I?” and they replied with, “If such & such jumped off of a bridge, would you want to do that too?!?” I’m sure you’ve come in contact with that convo either on the giving or receiving end… Or both!

That was our parents’ way of keeping us focused on what they’ve instructed us to do/not to do… focused on not being a follower of foolery… focused on what’s important. I urge you to listen to Yo’ Mama RIGHT NOW!

“Gas Prices have, once again, risen at an alarming rate!!!!”

”The Royal Family’s wedding is a must see…”

“Donald Trump is giving our president a hard time while possibly setting up his own campaign.”

“Osama Bin Laden is dead and has been buried at sea.”

“The NFL Lockout is back on!”

Listen to Yo’ Mama!!!!!!!!!!!  Please do not let these things distract you from what’s really important. Please don’t let these things distract you from God. Listen to Yo’ Mama’s voice from the sky saying, “I don’t care what gas costs, or what team owners/players can’t come to an agreement… What I about what I told YOU to do/not to do?!?!” That’s what’s really important. In the name of Christ, My prayers go out to anyone attached to this Mr Bin Laden situation. In the name of Christ, My prayers go out to any and everyone who is in a position of power and decision making… from the President of the free world, to the President of a 4th grade class in some elementary school somewhere. The decisions that they make definitely do have an affect on us. But the key is to not be distracted. I urge you to pray that same prayer… use the current times as a perfect opportunity to fine tune your own spiritual lives… and continue to focus on your focus. Go with God.

And if you have feedback, thoughts or choose to share, You know I always welcome that. I love hearing your responses whether they’re in agreement with my views or not…

Look at yourself… No, seriously… Look at yourself. What I mean is, what are you connected to? What are you hooked up to?

Check this out… Most trees begin to sprout leaves in the Spring. These leaves then fully bloom by the Summer. It’s the rain, and the sunlight that get the Xylem and Phloem (aka Tree Blood, lol) flowing and that’s what feeds the leaves and creates a union between the leaf and the tree. The better the connection between the tree and the leaf, the more healthy the leaf looks. When the Fall and Winter months come around, the Xylem and Phloem slow up and that’s what causes leaves to turn yellow… then orange… then brown… and then die from being disconnected to the tree. So, I ask you what are you hooked up to? What are you connected to? Is it making you green and rich? Or making you brown and closer and closer to death? Before you answer that…

Let’s take it a step further… The average person may look at a grapevine and see the big green leaves and flourishing vines and naturally assume that the vine is fruitful. However, big green leaves sometimes block sunlight. This blockage hurts the production and growth of more fruit. Our lives are the same way. We may have things and people around us that, from the outside looking in, appear to be helping and adding to us when they’re actually keeping us from developing more fruit. Pruning, is getting rid of the excess in order to produce more fruit. The same way a vine dresser prunes his vines, God does the same for us. Life sometimes needs to prune us, more times than not it hurts.

So again, I challenge you to ask yourself, what is my relationship hooked up to? Is it hooked up to a genuine desire for us to please each other in a righteous way? Or is it hooked up to, “Oh girl he’s fine” OR “Man, I just gotta have her“? What are your finances hooked up to? Are you in crazy debt and living check to check? Or have you created a plan to Spend, Save & Invest wisely? What is your health hooked up to? Are you eating right, and working out? Or do you just expect obesity and heart disease to just skip over you because you’re a “good” person? What is your spiritual life hooked up to?

Take a minute and Click ~> HERE <~ for a FREE download of a song I did a while back called “Searching” (Featuring Regal) off of the Brooklyn Spartans Mixtape. You can actually watch a live performance of it ~> HERE <~ as well. I think that song is a good theme song for you to listen to while you look at the different areas of your life and tell yourself the truth… Are you happily hooked up in a healthy way or do you need some pruning in certain areas to keep your fruit intact and your leaves from turning brown?

Your thoughts?
